To the Religious Community in Oregon
Including Judicatories,  Faith Based Organizations,
Congregations, and Faith Based Direct Service Agencies

Greetings,

We would like to formally invite the your organization to become a
member of the Oregon Faith Roundtable Against Hunger. This emerging
Coalition of Faith Communities has developed an active base of 405 persons
who are hunger advocates and members of 18 faith communities. Following
an official beginning in October of 2003, we have pursued educational
offerings at monthly General Meetings. These have focused on: Research on
the Root Causes of Hunger, School Lunch Programs, the current Direct
Service Agency system providing food for those who hunger in Oregon;
Predatory Lending and its impact on people in poverty; and have participated
in forming the Governor’s 5 year plan of the Oregon Hunger Task Force;

We have also hosted two Spring Conferences on Hunger as training
opportunities for hunger advocates and congregations who are active in
addressing hunger directly and seek justice for those living in poverty.

We host an Annual Fall Breakfast, with keynote speakers with important
messages on reducing hunger. In the past they have included Gov.
Kulongoski and US Senator Gordon Smith. At this event we also honor
individuals and organizations which have effectively met the needs of their
neighbors and who have lifted up their voices to address the systemic causes
impacting Oregonians living with low incomes.

We look forward to the development of Local Roundtables in many
counties in Oregon. It is truly in communities that we know and understand
the struggles that people have in meeting their need for food. We already
have advocates in several Oregon counties who are preparing to lead local
Roundtables. Local Roundtables are already forming in Astoria, Eugene,
Salem, and Metro Portland.

We invite you to join us in this noble effort lift the voice of the faith
community. Individually we have all sought to respond to this need. It is our
pledge to gather the strength, commitment, and experience of the faith
community in effective witness and service.

Sincerely,
Norene Goplen
Lead Convener
